Songcrafting Seminar with Pat Pattison and Steve Seskin

Hit songwriting gurus join forces to present a three day intensive workshop sharing their knowledge and passion for writing songs. Over the course of the seminar, there will be interactive lectures on melody writing and many facets of lyric writing such as imagery/emotion, point of view, rewriting, inspiration and dealing with "writer's block."

Areas covered include:

Song Sessions*: Using participants' songs as fodder to talk about the writing and rewriting process, Saturday and Sunday afternoons are spent in Song Sessions. These sessions are the core of the weekend, and will help illustrate the topics covered in the Friday evening and the Saturday/Sunday morning sessions.

Lyric Writing: What elements make up the most potent and engaging lyrics?  Examine magical combination of imagery and emotion and how those two factors contribute to drawing in the listener. Learn the power of eliciting a response by showing (engaging an audience) rather than telling (distancing an audience).

Making Music. Jump start your song with some outside-the-box melodic and harmonic approaches, as well as chord progressions and chord substitutions. We'll also deal with effective linkage of melody, harmony, and lyric.

Verse Development: Solving “Second Verse Hell.” Learn how to develop the flow of ideas BEFORE you waste time writing a lyric that dead-ends in some dark alley. Arrange your ideas so the song gains rather than loses interest as it moves forward, creating a chorus or refrain that can be repeated effectively without having to change the words each time.

Point of View – One of the most important lessons on the road to writing great songs, learn to choose from eight different perspectives when deciding how your characters can best tell their story. Examine complex ways to use perspective to bring out the most emotion in all your lyrics.

Writing Lyrics to Melody with Pat Pattison

There's no use writing a great lyric and a great melody if they don't work together. An unfortunate setting of a word or phrase can sink the emotion of the song, calling your listener's attention away from WHAT you are saying to HOW you are saying it. This 2-day evening seminar shows you how to get the most out of your lyrics by combining them accurately and effectively with melody. This is a "can't miss" seminar--it's bound to take your writing to the next level.

Individual songs will be critiqued in order of registration, so REGISTER NOW!
